Backup & recovery

The recovery plan matters as much as the wallet.

Plan for Bitcoin wallet recovery, secure backups, and family access. Learn from lost Bitcoin and failed custodians without putting recovery secrets at risk.

Look beyond the headline

Stories of lost Bitcoin often get reduced to a single object: a hard drive, a password, a device. The more useful question is what recovery depended on, and whether there was an independent way to regain access.

Custodial failures are different from personal backup failures. QuadrigaCX is sometimes described simply as a founder dying with the keys. The Ontario Securities Commission’s investigation instead found fraud and misuse of client assets at the centre of its collapse. Read the OSC’s QuadrigaCX report. A recovery plan cannot fix a custodian’s missing assets.

A device is not the whole plan

For many wallets, recovery information can restore access after a device is lost or broken. Exactly what you need depends on the wallet: a backup may not include an optional passphrase, multisignature configuration, or every other detail your setup requires.

Write down the procedure without putting secrets in an insecure place. Know which parts must remain confidential and which instructions a trusted person needs to find.

Test without creating a new emergency

A recovery drill should reduce uncertainty. It should not begin by wiping the only device that can currently access your funds. Follow your wallet’s official verification or recovery procedure and get qualified help when you are unsure.

Bitcoin.org discusses backups and wallet protection. A general guide cannot tell you whether a specific backup is complete, so use the documentation for your actual setup.

Plan for someone other than you

If you become unavailable, would a trusted person know that a recovery plan exists, where to find the instructions, and whom to ask for legitimate help? Can they follow the procedure without being sent hunting for guesses and fragments?

Technical access and legal authority are separate questions. Work with a qualified estate-planning professional on inheritance arrangements. Review the operational plan when your devices, family circumstances, or backup method change.
